Bio-Fertilizer

Turning Waste into Wealth for Sustainable Farming

Bio-fertilizer represents one of the most innovative and sustainable solutions in modern agriculture—a natural way to restore soil fertility, improve crop yields, and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers.

Through its renewable energy initiatives, Greenway Renewable Energy Implementation Organization (GREIO) promotes the production and use of bio-fertilizer derived from biogas plants and organic waste.

This approach not only protects the environment but also empowers farmers to adopt eco-friendly, cost-effective, and regenerative farming practices, strengthening both soil health and rural livelihoods.

What is Bio-Fertilizer?

Bio-fertilizer is a natural soil enhancer made from organic materials and beneficial microorganisms.

It contains living microbes such as:

  • Nitrogen-fixing bacteria
  • Phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms
  • Plant growth-promoting organisms

These microbes help plants absorb nutrients more efficiently and improve soil quality over time.

When applied to farmland, bio-fertilizer:

  • Improves soil structure and long-term fertility
  • Enhances plant growth and productivity
  • Restores natural soil biodiversity
  • Reduces dependency on synthetic fertilizers

GREIO’s bio-fertilizer is primarily derived from biogas slurry—a nutrient-rich byproduct of renewable energy production from livestock and organic waste—making it a powerful example of a circular and sustainable system.

GREIO’s Bio-Fertilizer Model

GREIO follows a waste-to-resource approach that transforms organic waste into valuable agricultural input:

  1. Collection of Organic Waste
Animal manure, crop residues, and biodegradable materials are collected from rural households and farms.
  2. Biogas Production
These materials are processed in biogas plants to generate clean energy for cooking and other uses.
  3. Bio-Slurry Extraction
The byproduct, known as bio-slurry, is rich in essential nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and organic matter.
  4. Bio-Fertilizer Processing
The slurry is treated, composted or dried, and enriched with beneficial microbes to produce high-quality, ready-to-use organic fertilizer.

This integrated process converts everyday waste into a valuable resource, supporting farmers while enhancing environmental sustainability.

 Why Bio-Fertilizer Matters in Bangladesh

Bangladesh relies heavily on chemical fertilizers to sustain agricultural productivity. However, excessive use has led to soil degradation, declining fertility, and environmental pollution.

At the same time, the country produces large volumes of livestock and organic waste that remain underutilized.

Bio-fertilizer offers a sustainable solution by:

  • Reducing dependence on imported chemical fertilizers
  • Restoring soil health and productivity
  • Supporting climate-resilient agriculture
  • Promoting sustainable waste management

Despite its strong potential, the adoption of bio-fertilizer remains significantly underutilized, creating a major opportunity for scale.

Bio-Fertilizer & Chemical Fertilizer Equivalence

Bio-fertilizer, particularly biogas slurry, contains essential plant nutrients (NPK) and organic matter that improve soil fertility over time.

While it does not always replace chemical fertilizers on a one-to-one basis, it can:

  • Substantially reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers
  • Improve nutrient efficiency in soils
  • Provide long-term soil health benefits beyond chemical inputs

In practical farming systems, bio-slurry can partially substitute chemical fertilizers while delivering additional soil and environmental benefits, especially for smallholder farmers.
